Andrew Wilson Livestock has joined forces with one of Victoria's oldest meat processors to establish a liveweight cattle buying service at the Mernda saleyards.
HW Greenham & Sons Pty Limited has been involved in the Victorian meat industry for six generations and currently operates a modern abattoir at Tongala in the state’s north.
The company values its strong relationship with cattle producers and has established a network of liveweight centres where it buys directly from farmers. There are no curfews - cattle are weighed as they come in and payment is made on the spot.
There are no deductions for levies either - farmers are paid the full price per kilogram.
Free transport
Greenham’s Mernda scales will be open every Tuesday from 9 am until noon. Subject to some conditions, free pickup of cattle is available for farmers within 25 km of Mernda.
The liveweight buying system offered by Greenham is well regarded by farmers according to Andrew Wilson. "Many of their clients have run comparisons between over the hooks and full liveweight, and are very happy with the system.
"We're really excited about this development. It will be ideal, especially for small producers, in the area right around the north of Melbourne. It's a very simple system. Just bring the cattle in during our opening hours and walk away with a cheque.
"We are expecting to draw stock from Sunbury right round to Lilydale including up as far as Kilmore," Andrew said.
This isn't the first association with the 100-year-old Mernda saleyards for Greenham. Executive chairman, Peter Greenham, remembers buying stock from Mernda many years ago when the company operated an abattoir in Melbourne.
